In the 1960s, Western Informel, often described as “hot abstraction,” became a dominant movement in Korea. Following the end of colonial rule and the Korean War, a younger generation strongly sought new forms of art and began to pursue renewed modes of expression.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nIn response to this trend, Choi explored geometric abstraction, sometimes referred to as “cold abstraction.” The motif draws from the structure of windows and doors in a traditional Korean house, hanok, where he spent his childhood. Unlike Western windows that bring in light directly through glass, hanok architecture filters light through hanji (Korean paper), allowing it to diffuse softly and seep into the interior. The diffused and shifting qualities of light are articulated through the overlapping structure of the numerals themselves. Subtle variations of the artwork’s background tones were adopted, and transparent foil stamping was applied so that the surface responds delicately to changing light conditions, allowing the nuances
